Gabe is a personal development coach & facilitator helping mission-driven humans live in alignment with their purpose. He left his tech job to travel the world by bike, and in the process found his calling in coaching. Gabe's favorite coaching approach is experiential learning, and he incorporates practices of play and exploration into the process of personal discovery with his clients.

His approach to personal growth is rooted in neuroscience-based CoActive coaching techniques and Authentic Relating, with a heaping spoonful of Japanese philosophy on top. He is passionate about foraging wild mushrooms, riding bikes, and the transformative power of psychedelics.

Terry will tell us about one relationship that faced a dead end and how he thinks about the idea that "the conversation between two people IS actually the relationship between two people." Finally, we explore how some skills learned in coaching school are actually valuable relationship resources in human relationship. And how these are sometimes confused for coaching. A topic we'll dive into more deeply in future episodes.

The Card Sort came into my life through a coaching client Kayla Viitamaki who is a UX (User Experience) Designer. For over two years we had been trying (and failing) to complete a Wheel of Life Exercise, and we would always find some more useful (if tangential) way of engaging with her needs and the life she was creating for herself.

           Card Sort

is a simple exercise to solve complex problems between competing interests by making them visual, tangible, and present. This effectively front loads the question of “What are making?” Creating agreement about what we are endeavoring to accomplish up front, prevents all kinds of problems down the road!

How is Card Sort Used in UX?

At the beginning of a new creative project, a UX team will gather in, say, a board room to better understand what the project is and who it is for, before setting out to bring it into existence. Anyone there can write down what they feel is important to the project, or to an end user. Even just the idea of seeing what, say, Marketing thinks will matter, gives an excellent overview of the build, allowing each team to better understand how their part makes up a whole. The cards are then sorted into clusters around ideas, and there are often dynamic discussions between interest groups about how various components interrelate. It is much more effective to have these discussions on day one, than it is to find out on shipping date that your various teams in silos weren’t even building the same thing!

If you are doing the card sort as a team coach, all you have to do is ask questions and guide the discussion in a collaborative direction.

How is Card Sort Used Coaching an Individual?

It can be harder to see within an individual, but we are all a collection of roles with competing interests. Another one of my individual clients, is a daughter, a model, a lesbian lover, an artist, a mother… even with this very simplistic view of a person, it’s easy to see how each of these roles brings its own complexity, demand for resources, and a different set of priorities than the other roles have.

How much of our time as coaches is spent supporting the client to explore their conflicting priorities? The Card Sort is an excellent way to explore faster AND deeper!

How does it work? and How to?

You will need markers, up to 75 cards, and a space where you can gather your whole team to work uninterrupted. I like to use coloured sharpies, and coloured sticky notes, but use what works for you.

Step 1) Which question are we here to answer? When I have been the Card Sort client, my coaching focus was “What is my life?” from the lens of what are the important components of my life, and how can I better understand their interrelationality to create new goals and better alignments? Another example of a great card sort question could be “Which city should I/we move to?” A great question for a Team Could be “What is the future of our Brand?”

Step 2) Everyone writes down the ideas which they feel are important and or relevant and places them on the table.

Step 3) Once the ideation is complete (or has at least slowed) you start moving the ideas into clusters, and discuss what to name these clusters. As a coach, this is your time to start asking questions which will draw attention and meaning to the way the components connect. If there isn’t an engaging dialog at this point, perhaps the representatives are assuming “It will all work out..” Be the non-expert in the room. Ask them to explain it to you like you don’t understand how these pieces fit together. Draw them into a deeper and more realistic view of what will be required of them.

Step 4) Revisit the card sort as often as necessary throughout the build phase.

           Conclusion

I am very much enjoying using this tool on my clients. I have even introduced it to coaches, so they can use it on me when I am the client. My hope is that you will get as much value from this simple and brilliant exercise as I have!

The FreerangeCoach Movement is about coaches creating experiences with and for their clients. We are standing gratefully on the shoulders of those who created the coaching style of the old industrial era and reframing the coaching conversation to include experiential coaches for people living and working in the post-industrial economy. If you work with teams or information, this is probably you. If your job or lifestyle didn’t even exist before 1974, this is definitely you! If you punch a clock and work on an assembly line; and your deepest hope is to continue doing this, you will not enjoy it here.

What are our stories about?

           1) Personal Growth and Development

You may already have a coach (or more than one!) You are doing your own work to grow. You are signing up for classes, workshops, and retreats, because you know you are worth the investment! Welcome home, we are your kind of people. :D We are also reading the books, seeking out the resources, meditating, listening to the Podcasts. Some of our favourites include Brene Brown, Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss, Byron Katie, Rich Litvin, Glennon Doyle, Michael Singer, Nedra Taweb…

           2) Experiential Coaching

           More Somatic

           3) Working With Teams

           Emotional Literacy, communication, leadership

           4) A work from anywhere lifestyle

It is easier than ever to work from anywhere with an internet connection, which opens up new flexibility to design and create the life you want! We love coaching clients who are using this to create life on their own terms! Also, our coaches wander freely between Coaching Trips and Speaking Engagements; enjoying a balance between the emplacement of home, and the freedom to explore as a digital nomad.

           5) Building Your Coaching Business

Building a traditional coaching business is a lot of work, making it three dimensional with client experiences adds a layer of complexity. These articles will explore topics important to you from client creation, asking for better referrals, creating an enthusiastic audience that is unique to you, writing Press Releases which will get you noticed, Securing Speaking Engagements, Writing your next Book with style, Better Branding, Initiating and nurturing Professional Partnerships (think Air Jordans)

           6) Media Mentions

When someone from our FreerangeCoach Movement is interviewed, gives a TED Talk or the FRCM is mentioned in a Magazine, Blog, Podcast etcetera, this is where we will share it with you.

Over the past twenty five years I have piloted various vessels ranging from small sailing dinghies to fifty foot twin engine power boats and a few things have revealed themselves to me as universal. The sea is the ultimate teacher for me, bringing forth knowledge not attainable in other arenas. Here are the top four lessons I have learned thus far:

           Patience

Life on a boat moves slower in relation to land life. It was not uncommon that after returning from an extended trip that when I would find myself at the first busy street with automobiles that things would seem really intense. “Somebody throw out a line!” I would often be thinking…

‘Cruising’ life (living aboard full time on a sailboat and traveling place to place) moves at less than ten miles per hour and things don’t always happen as fast as one might want them to. We are forced to slow down because that is the new reality. Plans change due to weather and sometimes in order to make landfall during daylight (always preferable), we found ourselves making a slow boat move even slower.

At one point in my life, I lived on a 35’ sailing sloop that had no engine. When the wind died, there was nothing to do but wait. Sometimes this would double or even triple the amount of planned time.

           Awareness- reading weather, repairs

The raw experience of life aboard I found to be directly tied to the weather. Sunny days were full of activity while stormy days could be very sedentary and muted. The awareness of what is coming and how to read cloud formations became a daily event which colored our lives.

Tuning in to the systems aboard the boat, I learned that things were only as complicated as I made them out to be. Conveniences such as pressurized running water, refrigeration, auto-pilot, lighting….all of these took maintenance. Every penetration on the boat eventually finds a way to leak. The sun and the salt is not easy on things and the biggest issues would present themselves over lack of movement and inflection in areas which are meant to move. The salt would build up and the sun would bake in corrosion. Without movement and fresh water, these areas would atrophy and degrade.

           The importance of feeling

Nowhere in my life has it become more important to embrace physical sensations than on the sea. The ability to sense a temperature change, rise in moisture, shift in the wind and change in wave pattern can make the difference between a controlled voyage versus avoidable emergency situations.

Instruments are essential (wind direction and wind speed, barometers, radar, etc.) and there is no replacement for physical sensations and just plain paying attention. We had a system called AIS which essentially is a radar system for other ships. This tool would allow us to assess other vessels in the area to analyze if we might be on a collision course. As with anything there were limitations to this amazing technology, the AIS did not pick up fishing vessels or their nets.

Feeling the barometric pressure drop in my bones, I would often be compelled to mobilize the rain catching system before the first rain drop fell thereby maximizing our harvest of fresh water.

           Embracing the present

Overall the most important lesson that I learned on the water was to live in the now. It is so easy to forget this lesson living in an intense and changing world where I often catch myself wondering what crazy event might be coming next and how I could prepare for it. Likewise, living in the past is easy to do- questioning decisions and evaluating what has already come to pass.

The present, the incredible NOW is really all we have. As humans, our advancements and fancy technology offers us the illusion that we have time. We don’t have time, time has us. All we have is this present moment and we can choose what to do with it.

Using patience, being aware and feeling into our realities, I have learned to maximize my enjoyment of the present to create my world. Embracing the present affords me the perspective to let all the petty details fall away, choosing love over strife, peace over chaos.

Are your habits controlling you? If so, you are not alone. The lives of many people are controlled by their habits. It may be time for some discipline in your life. Discipline is defined as a commitment to yourself in order to succeed and soar in life. The commitment is to do what you have to do, even when you don’t feel like doing it. You should be aware of your detrimental habits in order to take control. It is time to replace ineffective habits with effective ones, set goals and begin to soar in life.

Habits usually exist without our knowledge. If you introduce discipline as a daily ritual, you will consciously become aware of what you are doing. You need to learn to manage what is within your control such as your thoughts, your attitude, your self-talk and your reactions. To exercise control, you need to be aware of certain influences and let go of the things that are out of your control as for instance the weather, other people, and time.

Once you are able to establish the difference between your effective and ineffective habits, you can take the next step, start setting goals, start outlining your life plan and take action! Write down all your personal and professional desires in a journal, then categorizing them, and create an action plan. Also, think of what you can do for just one hour a day that can help get you where you want to be later in life. Breaking up large goals into numerous smaller pieces allows you to focus on the details and not get overwhelmed. Further tools to help you with setting and maintaining goals may include a prioritizing chart, a Soar Board, and a monthly monitoring chart.

Success is based on good judgment, and good judgment comes from experience. Give yourself permission to fail so you may learn. Any mistake is a learning opportunity and an act of courage. Once you learn your lesson, recognize its worth and reward yourself. Even the great Walt Disney lived through several failures personally and professionally, including bankruptcies before he became successful with the Disney brand. Be easy on yourself because the best experiences evolve from failure. If you maintain discipline in your life, you will eventually get there and you will soon harvest the fruit of your success.

The important message is that you can take control of your life, set goals and achieve those goals simply by implementing self-discipline. Discipline, again, is defined as a commitment to yourself in order to succeed and soar in life. The commitment is to do what you have to do, even when you don’t feel like doing it. Please note, any discipline will alter your life for the better. Begin today to truly live your life and begin to soar. Allow discipline to lead the way towards your successful future.

           Is Worthiness Holding You Back?

           Becoming Unstuck By Exploring Worthiness

Someone I coached was unemployed. They were stuck financially and at this familiar crossroads: they weren’t sure if they should go out and get a job or start their own company. They had a ton of doubts and were asking questions like, “What if I start my own company and it doesn’t work?” and “How will I satisfy my values of stability, reliability, and success?”

To me, those are worthiness questions. Even if it takes a long time for someone’s business to become successful, questions of worthiness become the primary issue because almost nobody starts a business that becomes immediately successful.

Success in business is a process of:

            Investing in yourself

            Believing in yourself

Creating habits that will work for your future, and

Sticking to that even when it doesn’t seem like it’s working.

The foundation that holds this process together is the belief that you are worth investing in.

Exploring Worthiness To Live A Life By Design

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be?” ~ Marianne Williamson

I have discovered that there are lots of people who choose not to explore worthiness and do the work that is required to live a life by design, not by default. One of the many reasons they do this is because they want to be left alone and live according to their current habits and patterns. Consciously or unconsciously, they ignore the consequences of doing that.

Personally, and as a coach, I am much more interested in the person who feels unworthy and has some awareness around it, rather than the person who is so deeply in denial that they have no awareness around it and therefore no felt need to address it.

A lot of coaches are not focussing on worthiness, but worthiness is a huge block to living your ideal life, if not THE block to people choosing to live the life that they want.

           A Short Cut

When the people I coach see worthiness as something that is too difficult or even impossible for them, I like to discover with them, “How do we create worthiness and make it easy?” If people are willing to work with you and do the difficult and potentially painful work of worthiness, it actually turns into an incredible shortcut to get to where you want to go.

How Do We Overcome The Difficulties Of Doing Worthiness Work?

You have to look at your story of unworthiness – the things that you have allowed yourself to believe and allowed yourself to feel towards your strengths, weaknesses, accomplishments, and roadblocks thus far. Get curious about the narrative you’ve been telling yourself by asking, “Why do I feel unlovable? Where did this story that I’ve been telling myself originate?” Spend some time in that place without numbing it or doing whatever you do to distract yourself from doing this kind of work.

           Take ownership

Another thing that’s difficult to do is actually taking ownership. In order to do anything meaningful with worthiness, you need to be willing to let go of your excuses. You can no longer hide behind things like; it’s the government’s fault, or corporations, or someone in your family. None of that stuff matters in the worthiness journey. As much as people will love you and support you on this journey, almost all of the difficult emotional heavy lifting is yours to do.

I listened to Brené Brown‘s podcast the other day and she was interviewing her guests about their experiences with childhood abuse and addiction. Her guests said that eighty percent of people who experience childhood trauma end up being addicts. Eighty percent! At the same time, they said that was the hand they were dealt and the part that comes after that,

           you are in charge of.

All three of the people involved in the interview said what they decided to do about their past experiences today was their business and their responsibility.

           The way you view worthiness

You can do something about the way you view your worthiness. And I would take it a step further and say, you are worth doing something about it. By facing the issue of worthiness and not ignoring it or numbing it you are saying to yourself, I feel worthy and I am worthy of this deep self work.

           Unworthiness blocks imagination

In my early coaching years, I felt like the problem for a lot of people was that they couldn’t imagine a life that was better than the life that they have now. Then I found that for most of those people, unworthiness blocked their imagination. Once that block is replaced with worthiness, imagination can still be an obstacle. That’s where I can help; my imagination for others has all kinds of flexibility and creativity.

A Client’s Time At The Cabin

I worked with someone who hit the pause in their life and spent time in a log cabin to map out their ideal life and how to implement it. I coached them along the way and we discussed questions like:

            What is your ideal life?

Something doesn’t feel right. What is it?

I treated that client as if their dream was within their grasp. After leaving the cabin in the woods we created really small steps to grow their new business. Eventually the business grew into several provinces and they became less stressed and they trusted their employees more.

           Worthiness is The Groundwork

The groundwork for this client was worthiness, even though we didn’t necessarily use the word “worthiness” at the time. Worthiness work is foundational to imaginative work. Once that’s done, the whole world is your sandbox.

           How Do Habits Impact Worthiness?

Healthy and unhealthy habits Impact your worthiness indirectly; when you practice healthy habits like prioritizing sleep to you are saying to yourself, “I am worthy of investing in.” Conversely, when you get into unhealthy habits you are making the opposite statement about investing in yourself.

What we put our energy into causes change and growth, and the habits we implement are how we leverage our energy. This past spring I found that I was consistently finding myself overwhelmed and unfocused, and so I introduced a regular practice of walking to the ocean near my house and office and meditating for twenty minutes. By investing my energy in a habit that helps me refocus my day and check in with what might be causing me stress, I am creating a daily structure that invests in my wellbeing. Habits are not specific to worthiness, but they work together with coaching and creating a life by design.

Worthiness Impacts All Aspects Of Our Lives

If you are holding on to difficult clients, that is absolutely a worthiness problem. Whether you are conscious of it or not, holding on to difficult clients suggests that you don’t believe you’re worthy of attracting great clients, and it is what stands in the way of your life by design. I invite you to reflect and if you find you are clinging to difficult clients or bad business practices, ask yourself the question, “Why am I hanging on?”

There is no area of life that worthiness doesn’t touch. All of these worthiness reflections and practices can (and should!) be applied to your personal relationships as well. When you believe that you are worthy of success in your business, of supportive, healthy relationships, of a life filled with intention and design then you are able to construct a life for yourself that is filled with purpose, vision, and intention.
